Maths is taught at Alder Coppice based on the teaching approach used in Singapore which has proven to be hugely successful in producing excellent mathematicians. This approach is used throughout our school with Nursery and Reception also using the same techniques. The children are showing themselves to be confident mathematicians with a high level of language and vocabulary used in their explanations and to reason and justify their ideas.
We use the Oxford University Press Inspire Maths programme to drive our Maths teaching. Following recent visits from Oxford University Press, we have been accepted as an Advocate School. This recognises and acknowledges the excellent teaching and learning of Maths across the school. Sue Lowndes, Inspire Maths professional development lead says “I am delighted that Alder Coppice has become an Inspire Maths Advocate School. It has been a pleasure to see how this school’s best practice in following the Singapore approach has developed the teaching and learning for staff and pupils.” Alder Coppice now holds open mornings throughout the year and welcomes teachers from local schools to observe the impact Inspire Maths has had on results and pupil engagement.
Alder Coppice has also been part of a Teacher Research Group with the Central Maths Hubs. Visits to our school by a Mastery Specialist have recognised and acknowledged the excellent work that has taken place on our journey to mastery teaching in Maths.
